The Engine Shed
The Engine Shed has been designed as both a working part of the development and a place open to the public. It brings together energy, green space and public activity in one building, reflecting Kentish Town’s industrial past while looking ahead to a more sustainable future.
At its heart is the Energy Centre, which will provide low-carbon heating, cooling and power to the whole Camden Film Quarter. Rather than being hidden away, this has been designed as a visible and educational feature. People will be able to see how the system works, helping to explain how renewable energy and new technologies are being used to reduce the area’s carbon footprint and support Camden’s environmental goals.
Above this sits the Pavilion — a flexible cafe space that could be used for local events, workshops and gatherings. Inspired by the historic engine sheds that once stood on the site, it will be built using natural and recycled materials, creating a warm and accessible place for people to come together.
The building is also surrounded by a new elevated public space, with planting, seating and views across Camden Film Quarter towards Hampstead Heath. In the future, this space will connect to a new pedestrian bridge, helping to bring Kentish Town within around a five-minute walk of the Heath and making it easier to walk or cycle between the two.
Together, these elements make the Engine Shed more than just a building. It will be a place where energy, community and green space come together — supporting everyday life, creating new connections, and contributing to a more sustainable neighbourhood.
